What are birthstones?

A birthstone is, as the name suggests, a gemstone that represents the month you were born. Unlike astrological star signs, which change later in the month, birthstones correspond exactly with each calendar month of the year. Birthstones have played an important role throughout history (more on that below), and are still a popular and personal way to choose gemstone jewellery today. Every month has more than one birthstone, so there are plenty of options when it comes to selecting the perfect accessory.
The history and the meaning behind birthstones

We don’t know exactly how long birthstones have been around. Some historians say that birthstones can be traced back to biblical times, taking inspiration from the twelve gemstones of the breastplate of Aaron as described in Exodus 28:15–30. Others believe they were influenced by Hindu traditions, which associate nine gemstones with different celestial forces. The Romans and ancient Greeks also had a special connection with gemstones, using them to symbolise certain planets or gods, which may also have influenced the concept of birthstones.
Although the idea dates back thousands of years, birthstones
weren't well known in Europe until the 16th or 17th century, with formal
written lists starting to appear in the 18th century. During this period, it
became more common for women who could afford it to wear their birthstone in
the form of rings,
necklaces,
and brooches.
So why do we wear birthstone jewellery? Well, it is believed
by some that wearing your own birthstone can bring good luck and fortune. Each
birthstone also carries its own meaning, making them even more special — read
our gemstones
meaning guide to find out more.
Today, birthstones are more popular than ever. The global
market for birthstone jewellery is growing, and is forecast to increase by 5.8%
by 2033 (Market
Intelo). This is no surprise, as personal jewellery is becoming more and
more appealing, especially to Millennials and Gen Z. In fact, 68% of survey
respondents under 35 said they preferred jewellery that tells a personal story
(Lefeng
Jewelery) — and what’s more personal than your own birthstone?
What is my birthstone?

Finding your birthstone is simple. There aren’t any special
dates to remember like astrology — it depends only on the month in which you’re
born. Many people mistakenly think birthstones correspond to star signs, but
birthstone dates and astrology dates are entirely separate. Whether you’re born
on the 1st or 31st of January, you still have the January birthstone (which you
can discover in our birthstone chart below), even though the dates fall under
two different star signs.
However, each star sign does still have a gemstone connection, in the form of zodiac stones. Also known as astrological birthstones, these gems align exactly with each star sign, giving you even more jewellery options to choose from. There is no official or standardised zodiac stones list like there is for traditional birthstones, but the gems in the chart below are generally considered to be the most widely recognised options across astrology.

Why are there multiple birthstones per month?
You’ll see in the birthstone chart above that every month has at least one alternative gemstone. Many of these alternatives have been added in recent years, but some were included on the official UK birthstone list compiled by the National Association of Goldsmiths in 1937. Alternatives were offered for each month, mainly to provide more budget-friendly options to make birthstones more accessible, which also gives more style and colour choices for jewellery.
Do birthstones in the UK differ from those in other countries?
Yes, birthstones in the UK do differ slightly from those in other countries, including the US. The UK list was officially standardised in 1937 by the National Association of Goldsmiths, while the American list was standardised earlier, in 1912, by the National Association of Jewellers.
While the UK and US lists are similar in many ways, there
are differences in alternative stones offered for certain months. Other
countries also have their own variations: for example, Russia historically used
stones linked to folklore and tradition. India also has a completely different
system: the Hindu Navaratna tradition links nine gemstones to celestial bodies
rather than months. Some Indian jewellers now combine this with Western monthly
birthstones to create hybrid charts.

Pair two birthstones together
Who says you have to stick to just one birthstone? Pairing two gems can make a piece even more personal and meaningful. One option is to combine your own birthstone with that of a loved one to create a truly sentimental piece. You could also mix your main birthstone with an alternative for a truly personal and eye-catching look.
When pairing stones, consider how their colours work
together. For example, contrasting shades like deep red and emerald green can
make each shade stand out, while similar tones, such as blue and purple, are
perfect for crafting a harmonious look. Think about size and placement,
too. A smaller secondary stone can
accent the main gem while keeping the focus on your primary birthstone, for
instance.
Don’t forget about zodiac stones
Birthstones aren’t the only way to add personal meaning to
jewellery; zodiac stones can be just as special. You can wear your zodiac stone
instead of your birthstone, or pair the two together for a look that’s uniquely
yours. Don’t want your zodiac and birthstone gems in one piece? You can still
enjoy your zodiac stone and birthstone as separate accessories. Are you a
Cancer with a July birthday? Try a ruby ring with an emerald bracelet. November
Scorpio? Complement a dark blue topaz necklace with aquamarine earrings. Either
way, combining zodiac and birthstones adds personality, meaning, and a touch of
style to every piece.
Now you’ve discovered the birthstones for each month, you’re now ready to find a piece of jewellery that’s truly personal and meaningful. Whether you’re celebrating a graduation, marking a special milestone anniversary, or simply treating yourself, birthstone jewellery offers a way to enjoy symbolism and style wherever you go.
