Pearls: The Timeless Trend
Pearls have long been the choice of the rich and famous, who team them with beautiful dresses for balls and red carpet events. Dating back to the early Roman Empire all the way to today, pearls are still a go to classic and timeless accessory. They are so celebrated, that the Victoria and Albert Museum put on a closed exhibition that ran to the beginning of this year to explore the history of these beautiful pieces.
Pearls are worn by a host of celebrities from Rihanna to Rita Ora, all the way to members of our Royal Family with both the Queen and Kate Middleton choosing these elegant and timeless accessories. But this trend doesn’t stop with the celebs, you are bound to spot a pearl or two at ladies day at Cheltenham and Ascot, or elegantly paired with an up-do and wedding dress for the blushing bride. Creating romantic visions of wealth and high society, pearls continue to grow in popularity.
There are a number of different types of pearls from the expensive and rare natural pearl to the freshwater cultured pearls that are more readily available and offer fantastic value for money. Cultured pearls are made by placing a small bead inside the mollusc shell around which the beautiful pearl is formed. Natural pearls are extremely rare, with very few found to be a suitable size for jewellery. These natural gems are created by chance inside oysters and it is this rarity that has adds to their value.
Pearls are also the birthstone for June and as we are now in June we thought we would highlight some of our favourite styles!
