Water Resistance

Water Resistance

Introduction

Only those watches described as water resistant are suitable for use in water, however there are varying degrees of water resistance which are outlined below.

Watches are tested for water resistance based on a static test; the water resistant depth stated is therefore not a true reflection of suitability for diving to these depths. We would suggest that the following guidelines be taken as in indication of the water resistance of a watch.

Industry Standard Terms

Water Resistant to 30M / 3ATM

A watch which is stated as water resistant to 30M (or 3ATM) is suitable for everyday use, will withstand accidental splashing and is suitable for wearing whilst washing your hands.

Water Resistant to 50M / 5ATM

A watch which is stated as water resistant to 50M (or 5ATM) is suitable for everyday use, will withstand slight submersion so can be worn whilst washing dishes for example, can be worn swimming, in a sauna and whilst poolside diving.

Water Resistant to 100M / 10ATM

A watch which is stated as water resistant to 100M (or 10ATM) can be worn whilst high-board diving and snorkelling in addition to those activities stated at the 50M level.

Water Resistant to 200M / 20ATM

Although tested to 200M (or 20ATM) watches with this level of water resistance are not suitable for scuba diving and in reality can be worn for the same activities as those named in the 100M level.

 200M Scuba Divers

Only watches which have been tested to ISO 6425 can be classed as 200M Divers water resistant. Such watches have been rigorously tested for suitability through sustained tests confirming the watch is ‘fit for purpose’ as a scuba divers watch. Only watches which have been through this process can be called ‘Divers’ and are the only watches which are suitable for scuba diving. When qualifying as a scuba divers standard, a watch is also tested in other areas such as luminosity, salt water testing and thermal shock, and is not exclusive to water resistance.
