When Elizabeth Taylor’s jewellery collection was sent to auction no one predicted it would deliver ground-breaking records, but that is what happened when it closed this weekend.
The Elizabeth Taylor Collection auctioned off by Christie’s Americas, pulled in an enormous $150 million (£96.6 million) after the world’s richest flocked to the event to bid for the Hollywood actress’s most stunning pieces, likely to have included hot diamonds and at least one gold bracelet.
Among the bestsellers was a 16th century pearl necklace, which sold for an incredible $11.8 million (£7.6 million).
The star, who died at the age of 79 in Los Angeles last March, was known for her love of diamond jewellery.
A portion of the proceeds will be donated to a good cause close to the star’s heart – the Elizabeth Taylor Aids Foundation.
Chairman and president of Christie’s Marc Porter said: “This is without a doubt the greatest private collection of jewellery ever assembled in one place.”
