Madonna is perhaps the ultimate pop diva and it seems her style of equal outrageousness and outright entertainment remains unrivalled in the music world.
She took to the stage for a 12-minute performance during halftime for the highly-anticipated Super Bowl showdown between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots yesterday (February 5th).
The 53-year-old looked to be defying time as her flawless physique and stunning looks continued to captivate a US audience of more than 100 million.
Donning diamond earrings, a midi-length black dress and elaborate gold belt and crown, the singer was reminiscent of a Greek goddess.
She performed a host of classics for viewers, as well as the newest single due out from her recent album, MDNA.
Among the song selections she delivered were Vogue, Like A Prayer, Express Yourself and Give Me All Your Luvin’.
The performer was accompanied onstage by cheeky British act MIA, who caused a slight stir for the NBC network when she flipped audiences her middle finger during the short show.
Madonna was also joined by hip hop favourite Cee Lo Green and recent chart topper, Nicki Minaj.
While the diva maintained electrifying stage presence, MIA’s stunt caused critics to align it with 2004’s nipple-gate raucous, which saw former NSync singer and soloist Justin Timberlake reveal Janet Jackson’s nipple to an incredulous Super Bowl audience.
At the end of the day, however, all eyes were on Madonna as she ensured audiences could not but be gripped by her chariot riding entrance right up to her enthralling conclusion.
The singer has not entirely side-stepped pubic reaction this year, however, as her new album title sparked a debate on micro-blogging site Twitter just moments after she announced it during filming for The Graham Norton Show.
Tweeters took to the site to debate whether MDNA was a genuine abbreviation of the singer’s stage name, or if it was a tongue-in-cheek nod to the dangerous drug MDMA.
