The rich red tones of garnets are perfect for the 2015 Colour of the Year: Marsala Red

Some of you may already know that garnets are the beautiful birthstone for January. While the garnet is actually available in a wide range of colours (twenty-nine according to one account!) including green, yellow and pink, the name is most commonly used to refer to stones of a deep red colour, known more precisely as pyrope. In fact, as we’ve mentioned before elsewhere, this colour may be where the word garnet comes from, deriving from the Latin word ‘granatus’, meaning seed, due to its similarity to the colour of pomegranate seeds.

This shade of garnet is particularly timely this year as Pantone have chosen the lovely deep red Marsala as their 2015 Colour of the Year. With its warmer, earthier tones, we feel that garnets reflect Marsala red far more closely than the brighter shades of rubies, making it the ideal gemstone for this colour trend.

Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute® describes Marsala as “a subtly seductive shade, one that draws us in to its embracing warmth” and this description is perfect for describing garnet’s deep range of tones.

Another aspect of this beautiful gemstone that makes it perfect for adding a touch of Marsala to everyday outfits is its comparatively durable construction. The Mohs’ scale was designed to grade the ‘scratchability’ of different jewels, with diamond the hardest at 10. While garnets don’t measure as high as sapphire or ruby, both around 9 on the scale, it is still relatively hard at 7.5, making it a great choice for routine wear as it doesn’t require extreme care when worn. You would still want to remove it when doing any sort of manual labour, however, but then we probably don’t have to tell you that! What you may not realise is that you should also be careful of all your jewellery when doing household tasks, such as hoovering. Obviously the risk here is much lower, but it is still possible to knock the stone and damage it accidentally. Speaking from experience, there is nothing worse than forgetting to remove a ring and then realising too late!
